Why I Built OPENSPACE: Meet the Founder

OPENSPACE didn’t begin as a business plan.
It began with a deep need for stillness — and a vision rooted in purpose.

I’m Donail Biggers — a builder, civil engineer, and founder of SQUARED, a design company focused on creating intentional spaces that serve both people and the planet. After years working in construction and real estate, I felt called to create something different: a space that embraced simplicity, respected the land, and invited people to pause.

When I first stood in the Big Bend desert, I knew I had found that space. There was something sacred about the silence, the stars, and the open horizon. I envisioned a place where people could disconnect from the noise and reconnect with themselves.

That vision became OPENSPACE, a micro resort designed to help others experience the same peace I found in the desert.

But bringing OPENSPACE to life required more than blueprints — it required faith, resilience, and relentless dedication. Building in such a remote and rugged landscape came with its own set of challenges. But each decision, each obstacle, and each lesson became part of the design. I poured all of it — the passion, the process, and the persistence — into every container home and A-frame cabin on this land.

Through SQUARED, I created four off-grid stays — two container homes and two custom A-frames, all powered by solar energy and built with sustainable, repurposed materials. Each space is intentionally designed to honor the environment and encourage stillness.

OPENSPACE is more than a place to stay — it’s a place to return to what matters.
