Founded as a quicksilver (cinnabar) boomtown in the late 1800s, Terlingua's furnaces ran around the clock through World War II — then went quiet almost overnight. What's left is a ghost town of stone ruins, a cemetery lit by candles every November, and a few hundred desert dwellers who never left.
